January 20, 2014 – Getting a dental crown is never a fun process. The various sounds, tastes, and discomfort can be a bit much. Then there is the temporary that you wear for two weeks. You have to worry about it falling off and being sensitive. Then you get to go back in for a second dental appointment, and that’s if the crown fits! Sound fun?

But now there is a way to skip some of that. Now your dentist can make your crown in about an hour. So, there is just one appointment. No impressions, no temporary, no asking for another day off of work. The crown is made there in the office.

With the use of CAD/CAM or three-dimensional pictures, a dental crown can be made in one visit. Powder is applied to the tooth to create a reflective surface, and a camera is used to capture the shape of your tooth in 3D. That is how the information is obtained, instead of taking a messy impression of your teeth. That’s right, NO IMPRESSION!

Next, the “milling unit” carves the crown out of a solid block of ceramic. The crown will be made out of very strong ceramic, and it is about three times as strong as the ceramic placed on crowns with those black lines. And the crown in an hour has NO BLACK LINES! So, they are aesthetic.

The crown is then bonded in place. Traditional crowns are merely cemented. These two may sound alike, but there is actually a big difference. Cemented crowns rely on friction to stay in place. Bonded crowns use the millions of tiny little pores in your teeth to almost fuse together. This helps keep the crown on better and provides better thermal protection for the tooth.

Now that the crown is in place, you get to go home. There is NO TEMPORARY! That is it. You will have a new crown that was created in about an hour. And now you will have more time to go out and enjoy all the things St. Augustine has to offer. Click here to learn more about the dental crown in an hour.
